Newsletter- Room 3

This week we continued talking about how Castles were a type of home that was built to protect the people inside.  Using a Refrigerator box we talked about how we were going to design our Castle in our classroom.  We discussed the colors of choice and the children took a vote and decided on Gray and Black.  We talked about where we wanted to place the door and windows and the top to be cut like our blocks in the block area.  The children also decided that they wanted rectangular blocks instead of round stones on their Castle.  We also discussed that the Castle needed a name. The children named our castle the Heart Castle.  Along with Painting our Castle all week we also made shields and Flags.

The children really enjoyed the 2nd book The Princess in Black and the Perfect Princess Party.  The children wanted to hear more about how Princess Magnolia’s alarm ring kept ringing throughout the party to fight the monsters. All the Princess wanted to do was open her presents and have fun at her party with the other 11 Princesses.  Ask the children what the Pink monster ended up doing for the Princess in Black.  Next week we will start reading the 3rd book in this series.

In Math this week, we continue to count and make sums of ten.  The children are getting good at counting and number identification and picking up new games faster.  This means the games, we play are now being played in smaller groups and they play more and learn more math.  Our new game this week was The Robot Math game, in which there are many pieces to choose from but you need to spin and count to get the right body part in order to make your robot.  We also included Chutes and Ladders, Candyland, Sorry, Number War, Number Bingo, Fish and the sum of 10, The frog and the flies, and Chess.

I am always looking for more things to incorporate into our classroom.  Every day in our morning meeting I will be introducing new activities.  This week we sang This Old Man, The Finger Band, and Looby Lou.  Music is so powerful and ignites all areas of development and skills so why not start first thing in the morning.  Every Thursday Morning we will work on Mystery Photos and eventually my goal for our class is to make our own Mystery Photos.  See if you can guess which are a fruit? which are vegetables? Which are neither?

Some of the books we read this week:

Would You Rather be a Princess or a Dragon?  By Barney Saltzberg

King Alice By Matthew Cordell

King Jack and the Dragon By Peter Bently and Helen Oxenbury

The Potato King By Christoph Niemann

Glass Slipper Gold Sandal By Paul Fleischman

Just a quick reminder:  We do go outside every day unless of weather conditions.  Please have the children bring hats, mittens or gloves, snow pants, boots and another item they may want to wear outside to keep them warm.

Have a warm and safe weekend!!

Sincerely,

Ms. Demetra
