Newsletter-Room 3

Castles! Castles! Castles!  We have been busy yet another week of exploring Castles.  We discussed Castle’s life and how taking a bath back in the day was different from our world today.  People had bathed in big wooden tubs, and servants heated the water over a fire.  We also talked about how the rooms were big and so were the beds, but at night the curtains around the bed kept them warm since castles were damp and chilly.  We also talked about how there were no televisions or the internet in castle times. People had to find other things to do.  Acrobats, Jugglers, and Musicians came to put on shows.  The children added Hearts to our Castles since the name of our castles is The Heart Castle.  We also sang a song: Come to the Castle.

Since the library did not have the third book last week of The Princess in Black I went back to The Adventures of Sophie Mouse Forget-Me-Not Lake by Poppy Green.  Well…. this will probably be the last of this book in this series that we read.  The children were not excited to start this book!! I did go to the library Thursday night and secured not just book three but the fourth book to so we would not run into this problem again. lol, Meanwhile Sophie Mouse wishes she could play in the water at Forget-Me-Not Lake with her friends, Hattie and Owen but she can’t because she’s a mouse!!  In this story, the animals are excited that they are making presentations for school about life as the type of animal they are and are excited to share a list of things to their friends.  So along with the animals in this story, our classroom will also be learning about each other.  Each week on a Friday a child from our class will be picked to do an All About Me Poster and bring in Five items that represent them.  More information to follow.

In Math this week, we continue to count and have fun in Math!! The new game we introduced this week is the Mini Muffin match-up game.  It develops math skills by counting, sorting, matching and it increases fine motor skills with the Squeezy Tweezers.  This also helps improve the fine motor pincer grasp that increases writing skills.  The others on the list this week included: Candyland, Dominoes, Number Bingo Counting/adding Donuts, Old Maid.

During the Morning meeting this week we incorporated some new songs and used the Rhythm Sticks to these songs.  We Tapped our sticks to the song: My darling, then we rolled the dough, then stirred the sauce, spread the sauce, grate the cheese, chopped the pepperoni the whole time using our Rhythm sticks.

We then read a poem “I Have A Dozen Dragons” in this poem we discussed What is a dozen? and What is a Baker’s Dozen? Ask the children and see if they remember.  On another note that I found interesting is that the term Baker’s dozen originated in the Middles Ages.  Bakers during that period had a reputation for selling underweight loaves so to make sure that they did not sell underweight bread, bakers started to give an extra piece of bread away with every loaf, and the thirteenth loaf with every dozen.

We have been adding our sight-words to our word wall and this week we added  Get and We.   I also added a little mini sight word reader that the children can share with you at home.

We also had our Mystery Photo this Thursday ….see if you can guess them?

Some of the books we read this week:

Princess Super Kitty  by Antoinette Portis

Over At the Castle  by Boni Ashburn

The Sunflower Sword by Mark Sperring

The Big Princess by Taro Miura

Have a wonderful and safe weekend.   Enjoy the snow… I know the kids did at school.

Sincerely,

Ms. Demetra
