Dear Parents,

In our chapter book, Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride by Kate DiCamillo.  Baby Lincoln hid in the backseat of Mr. Watson’s car.  We discussed if this is a safe thing to do and why it isn’t safe.  Ask your child about what they said about hiding in a car.  Also in the chapter book Mercy isn’t wearing a seat belt.  What happens to Mercy because she isn’t wearing a seat belt?  Ask your child.  We watched a small animated clip about why we should wear seat belts in the car.  Ask your child what they thought of the two scenarios they showed one family with a seat belt on and the other family without their seat belt.  What happened?  The children continued to work on dictating their stories to me along with their drawings in their journals.  It’s so nice to hear them say “Look how much we have done already in our journals”.   In the story, Mercy and Mr. and Mrs. Watson have a tradition for a special Saturday lunch and a Saturday adventure in the car.  I sent home a paper that you can talk about with your child about your own traditions at home. Then they will share their family tradition with our class.  Please send the papers back on Monday.  Thank you for your help and for helping your child recognize your family traditions within your own home.

During math, I placed a variety of items on a table for the children to explore.  These items include a measuring tape, a stopwatch, dominoes, snap cubes,  a ruler, and an abacus.  I asked them what do you see, and then asked what do the items all have in common.  Some said for measuring, counting, toys, and stuff.  Each of these different tools helps us when working on math.   Then we read the book 12 Ways to Get to 11 by Eve Merriam  In the story, we see different items around us that can be added together to make 11.  The class then proceeded to work in groups to make a page of their own about the book to come up with 11.  Here are their drawings that came up with a story that added up to 11.  The children also did a challenge in the morning with picking a number 1-20 and trying to find different ways to add different times. I also introduced a new dice game.  The game is Dice War.  The children worked in pairs and rolled the die at the same time. Whoever rolls the higher number takes the item from the center.  When all 10 objects are collected that ends the game.  Try this game at home with your child and again use any 10 of the same items.  Have fun!!  I enclosed two dice for each child in a plastic bag to keep at home.

In Art,  we used watercolor pencils and watercolors to make our picture for Art to Remember the children are so excited to show you the drawings that they worked on. These will be sent home at the end of September keep an eye out for these amazing and colorful pictures your child did in class.

Today is International Dot Day !!  We celebrated it by watching a clip on YouTube about The Dot Book by Peter Reynolds.  https://youtu.be/1pAaA_MbpwU?si=OI43xR81EZcGRP9B

We went from that to reading the book and then we did The Dot Song with Movement by Emily Arrow and also decorated the front of the school with chalk dots.  I hope you were able to see their beautiful work.

We continue to read Mercy Watson!  We are now onto our second book,  Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride by Kate DiCamillo  The children are really into this series and find Mercy Watson unusual and hilarious for a pig.  Ask your child how did the adventure start off in the convertible?  What did Mr. Watson do?  and who popped up from the back seat?

We read a poem about a pig, and we found out that pigs are different colors, they have ears and tails, and like to roll in the mud to stay cool.  In the story Mercy enjoys eating so we made apple pies.  We also found out that pigs can eat apples but not apple pies.  The children enjoyed making and eating their apple pie for their snack.

In math this week we measured around our classroom.  The children talked about how many steps it takes to get to the door from the back counter.   They went looking for 12-inch, 10-inch, and 8-inch items and then drew each item on their paper.  This is a skill for every day and this nurtures critical thinking and problem-solving skills.  Have your child look for items around your house using a rule.

Last week we celebrated George’s birthday!!!  What a wonderful treat for George and for our classroom.  Thank you again Mr. and Mrs. Proutsos for taking time out of your schedule to read both books. 🙂

Books we read this week:

Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore! by David McPhail

If You Give A Pig A Pancake by Laura Numeroff

Secret Agent Splat! by Rob Scotton

Too Tall Houses by Gianna Marino

Attack of The 50-Foot Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold

Dear Parents,

This week we started with our Chapter book, Mercy Watson to the Rescue by Kate DiCamillo.  Mercy Watson is a Pig and she lives with Mr. and Mrs. Watson.  Guess what Mercy Watson’s favorite thing to eat is???  Buttery toast!  This pig is obsessed with food but really wants buttery toast all the time.   So of course, our class tried buttery white toast and cinnamon bread toast.  Ask your child which was their favorite toast?  We continue to draw and they dictate their stories to me and have fun reading all of Mercy’s adventures.  Ask your child what happened to Mr. and Mrs. Watson?  Does Eugenia like Mercy Watson? And who is Baby Lincoln?  Why did the fire truck with the firefighters come to help?

Eugenia in the story believes pigs belong on a farm.  We discussed which animals are on a farm and watched a video.  The children partnered up and will be investigating more about the animal they chose.  Ms. Bia’s class the 6th and 7th graders will be helping us with the research and eventually sharing our project with other classes.  Ask your child which animal they choose to learn more about!

In Math, we played a new board game Buy It Right.  In this game, they worked on counting money, adding, subtracting, being generous to a friend, and taking turns.  This game was the hit of the week! On Tuesday when the class played different dice games we used many math strategies.  The children were able to rotate and play the different dice games.  Our class continues to work on “How Many Do You See?  The children are asked to tell how many they see?  The children counted them and saw different ways they could be grouped, by color shape, or fruit.   Our group game was number bingo and the last round was a little tricky with the pattern to win.

We talked about the Blue Full Moon which was on Wednesday, August 30th.  We also listened to the song Blue Moon by Frank Sinatra.  In the song, there is a solo in which an instrument is being played ask which instrument? (A Saxophone).  We also watched the video of the book Moon! Earth’s Best Friend by Stacy McAnulty. Each month we will be learning about the different names of each moon and the phases.  Ask your child how many phases the moon goes through? (8)

We had two birthdays before school started on August 1st.  We celebrated them on Friday!  Connie and Hollie’s Mom came in and read the book The Gruffalo.  Thank you so much for coming in and sharing this story with us.  Happy Birthday Connie and Hollie!!!

Every Friday we go up to our Library and enjoy looking at books and sharing with our friends.  The children pick two books and bring them down to enjoy for the week.  Also if you want to donate books that you don’t need anymore at home we will gladly accept them here at school.  Thank you!!

Have a fantastic long weekend and have fun!!

Ms. Demetra
