Dear Parents,

We continue to read our chapter book Zoey and Sassafras Caterflies and Ice by Asia Citro.  In this story, Zoey likes helping magical animals that ask for help.  Ask your child which magical animal is she currently helping?  (Caterflies)  Who is Sassafras?  (Zoey’s Cat)  Zoey and her Mom get busy making Sassafras snowboots out of fabric.  Why does Sassafras need snowboots?  On Monday please have your child bring in their favorite stuffed animal so they too can make fabric snowshoes for their animal or doll.  In the story, Zoey needs to help the eggs and brings a thermos with hot water and then puts salt after she pours the hot water on the ice.  In our class, we froze some toys and then poured hot water and salt.  Ask your child what happened to the one pan inside and the other pan outside.

On Wednesday, was opposite day!  All week we have been singing Mrs. Mary Mack and doing the clapping movement.  But on Opposite day we changed the lyrics.  The kids thought it was hilarious!  Ask them to sing it for you.

Along with individual reading and reading with me, we incorporate one day a week with a small reading group.   It was great to hear everyone trying and reading the books together and helping one another out when they needed assistance.  Please continue to read with your child at home we need to reach our goal.  This week I forgot to send home the reading books please go ahead and read what you have at home and write it down on the reading log.  Please return the reading log every Monday.  Thank you!

In our class this week we were focused on the word family -an words.  The children were so excited when I hid those words around our classroom and when they found them they had to say each word and find the matching word on the word wall.  The children had so much fun they wanted me to hide them again and again.  The last time they couldn’t find the last five words and can’t wait to find them on Monday.

The children continue working on Math games, math challenges, and working on Subtraction word problems.

This whole week we celebrated National School Choice week!!  On Friday the children participated with the whole school in our school-choice dance with their yellow scarves and wearing yellow.

Also, please remember we go outside every day.  Please remember to have snow pants, boots, a hat, and waterproof gloves.  The children enjoy the outdoors!!  Thank you for always supporting your child and our wonderful school.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Demetra

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!!! Hope you all had a wonderful break and wish you all the best for 2023!!

The children had a wonderful time reconnecting with their friends and getting back into our school routine.  The children were surprised and excited to see our new school playground.  What a great addition to our school!!

This week we talked about how reading is important and I  told the class that my challenge is to read 100 books before the end of the year.  I asked the kids if they could do this challenge and the kids said we can do more!!  After much discussion, the challenge is to read 1,000 books as a group before the end of the school year.  The children said they will read one or two books a night.  Please help them succeed by reading every night.

We also reviewed our -at family words again and looking forward to the next group next week.  Ask your child if they remember the word wall words.  (At, rat, mat, sat, bat, cat, that, splat, hat, that, fat, pat)

This week in Math we read the book Hershey’s Kisses Subtraction Book by Jerry Pallotta  The children had a chance to understand and use the minus or take away sign and again the equal sign.  The children used their math journals and rolled two dice to make subtraction problems.  The children continue to work on addition sentences to solve the problem and also worked on subtraction sentences to solve the problems this week.  It is a challenge but we are working on it every day.  The children had fun doing a word search by finding the words by counting by 10s and finding the missing numbers in a line.

Next week we will start our new chapter book.  The children are excited and curious about what this new story will be about stay tuned….hopefully you heard at least the name.

Have a wonderful long weekend see you on Tuesday!
