Dear Parents,

We continue to read Zoey and Sassafras Unicorns and Germs by Asia Citro.  In this story, the Magical Unicorn is hurt.  Ask your child what is Zoey and her Mom doing to help the Unicorn.  We continue to write in our journal and keep making big strides.  In our class this week we were focused on the word family -ap words.  The children still get so excited when I hid the words around our classroom.  Some days it’s easy to find the words and other days we are still looking for words a couple of days later.

Last week, on Thursday we celebrated the 100th day of school!  Our class had many “100” challenges. Can you write 100 words? Can you find numbers 1-100 in our classroom?  Can you jump on one foot 100 times, What can you make with 100 cups, What can you build with 100 legos.  What would you buy with 100.00 dollars,  How many steps is 100 from our classroom?

On Tuesday we celebrated Valentines’s day!! Just like the 100th day, we started the day by writing what they love, drawing and painting hearts, making cards for parents, and Watching a story video on  Amelia Bedelia’s first Valentine’s day. Our class also had a dance party to many of their favorite songs.  Along with these special activities, their special lunch was a hit and we want to thank all the parents that helped out.

Please continue to keep reading we only have 66 days left of school and we are only at 325 books let’s help them read and reach our goal of 1000 books.

This week in math we talked about data, making a pictograph, and watched a short video.  After watching the video the children wanted to collect and sort information about  5 winter animals (Arctic Fox, Polar Bear, Wolf, Red fox, and Snowy Owl). The children wanted to ask all the classes which winter animal was their favorite.  Then, each child in our class had an opportunity to present our project and explain why we needed this information to make our pictograph. The children were so excited!  We came back to the classroom and wrote the animals on the board and each child read each animal and how many tally marks they had we added their list to the board and now we are ready to do the pictograph and share with the other classrooms the results.  The animal that won was the Snowy Owl than the Polar Bear in second and third place was the Wolf, the Arctic fox and lastly the red fox. Whether it’s a tally chart or pictograph, this was great for learning about representing data and understanding charts and graphs and that math is all around us not just in our classroom. The children also learned an interesting fact about Wolves from Mrs. Marianthi. Ask your child about the wolf and the moon.  In the next couple of weeks, we will be finding out three to four interesting facts about each of these animals.  The children already asked if they could do the same thing about the spring animals in all the classrooms again.

Have a great weekend! See you all on Tuesday.
